The Minister of Railways advised that the council’s request for a joint road and railway bridge at Waitangi could not be acceded to. There was no intention of building a concrete bridge there, but to repair the present one. Mr T. E. Crosse suggested that the channel at Waitangi should be filled in and the river taken somewhere else.. The chairman stated that ho was very doubtful as to the foundation, owing to the recent trouble in finding a bottom for the piles used when repairing the bridge. ' Mr T. Mason Chambers suggested that the Public Works Department should be asked to build the bridge for the council. He then moved that the chairman interview the Department to ascertain if it would willing to prepare plans and specifications for a bridge suitable to the council’s requirements. This proposals was warmly supported by Mr W. Tucker. Mr T. E. Crosse: The question of the river will have to be deflnitolv settled. The chairman: If the Department bnilds the bridge it will see that the river will ndt go elsewhere. Mr Chambers’ motibn was then agreed to. VIGOR BROWN DOMAIN. The Vigor Brown Domain Board wrote asking if the council would give a grant towards the funds of the board so that the domain could be fenced. 2k member: Where is this domain? Another member: Somewhere in the Inner Harbour. (Laughter). Mr Smith: Possibly at the Breakwater. (Laughter). This is a matter I would certainly like to look in to. The council then decided to reply stating that it could not see its way clear to make a grant as requested. NGATAPA SUSPENSION BRIDGE. The Wairoa County Council asked for assistance in the cost of strengthening the Ngatapa suspension bridge the council’s share being approximately £37 10s. The matter was referred to Mr V. Barry to report to the next meeting of the council. HASTINGS SEWER OUTLET. “I want to make it clear that 1 am going to take up the stand of getting rid of the sewer,” said Cr. Tucker when a report was received from the Health Department regarding the condition of the Ngaruroro River by the Hastings sewer. ‘‘The Clive people are not going to stand for it any longer,” he continued. ‘‘This is a serious matter and the present state of things is most unsatisfactory. When the members of the Rivers Commission recently went down the river in a boat they were very glad to get away from it. The position is intolerable to the Clive people. They have had enough of it. It is possible that the Hastings Borough council will have to be notified that they will have to take the sewer elsewhere. The matter was then referred to Cr. Tucker to confer with Dr. Valentine when he visits Napier and to report back to the council. • STOCK PADDOCKS. “It is not fair that ordinary ratepayers not interested in stock should called to contribute to such an extent,” said Mr T. Mason Chambers when a letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society asking the council to provide water and shade in the stock paddocks where necessary. “The brokers are the ones who reap the most benefit out of the travelling stock and they are the ones who should pay for it,” said the chairman. No action was taken. The commission appointed to inquire into the proposals for the forming of the Taradale town district and portion of Greenmeadows into a borough wrote citing the council as a party to the inquiry. Cr Eriksen stated that if the rate payers wished to go into the proposed borough he would have no objections. Ho did not wish to help them into it. He had been somewhat misrepresented at the last meeting of the Council in supporting the chairman when he suggested thatithe council give the proposal every assistance. Mr A. H. Fergusson, the council’s clerk, was appointed to represent the council during the sitting and in the meantime to confer with Cr. Eriksen on the matter. DRIVERS’ LICENSES. ,The Council was asked by the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association that every care be taken to ascertain the fitness of motor drivers before issuing licenses. “Fullv 90 per cent, of the accidents are caused by, carelessness and through liquor ’’ said the chairman, Mr H. M. Campbell. M.P. Mr T. E. Crosse; Which is the trouble th© quality or the quantity? Mr Campbell: The quality! Mr M. P. Eriksen: I have never heard of anyon© having an accident when learning to drive. Mr Campbell: The only man who can effectively deal with them is the magistrate. The letter was received.
