Miss Evans left Hastings this mornIng on a holiday visit to Wellington. Miss Maud Baker has returned home to Hastings after spending a holiday at New Plymouth. Dr. and Mrs. McLean, of Waipukurau Sanatorium, are at present staying at Te Awanga. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Bale, of Havelock North, intend leaving on a trip to England about the end of March. Mr Alevander Veitch, formerly ot the firm of Veitch and Allen, died at Wellington yesterday. The chairman (Cr. A. C. Russell) has been appointed to represent the Waipukurau County at the Grey Dis trict Diamond Jubilee celebrations this month. Mr W. S. Thompson, who for sever „l years has been stationmaster at Waipukurau has received notice of his transfer to Helcnsville on per motion.. Tho chief clerk (Mr J. O’Connor) has been advised of his appointment to the position of stationmaster at Upper Hutt.
Mrs Hogan left Hastings this morning for Palmerston North, where she will be present at .the eroquet competitions. Dr. Beryl Lawrence, of the staff of the Christchurch hospital has been appointed house surgeon at Gisborne Hospital. Mr. Peate, manager of the National Bank, Hastings, is an inmate of Royston Hospital awaiting an operation for appendicitis. C. C. Dacre will not be available to play against the Australian cricketers,, as he will sail on February 14 for England, and cannot change his plans. Miss Myra Jabo'sen, who has bee a the guest of Miss Mavis McGuire, of Hastings, left by the mail train this morning for Dannevirke. The Rev. W. L. Frost C.F., vicar of all Saint’s, Taradale has been sue* easeful in passing his first B.A. degree.
Mr Ken Leggett, of Napier, has accepted the appointment of organist at tho Trinity Church, Tauranga and left this morning to take up his position. Mr Charles Pegg, recently appointed physical director of the L.M.C.A. Christchurch, is due in the city from England at the end of February. Mr Fegg is accompanied by his wife and child. Mrs T. E x Taylor, Dominion president of the Women’s Christian Tern, perance Union, has been appointed te represent that body on the official delegation to the Women’s Pacific Conference at Honolulu in August. The appointment is announced ot Mr Peter Angus Macfie solictor, Maryborough, Queensland, as commis* sioner of the Supreme Court of New Zealand for tho purpose of administering and taking all such oaths affidavits, and affirmations as provided under the Judicature Act, 1909. The death hos occurred of Mr William Culpan, aged 70 years. Deceased was one of the best-known Auckland residents. He was in business tor a long period as a real estate agent, and for thirty years was orgainst and choirmaster of St. Andrew’s Church. He was one of the oldest members of the Auckland Bow. ling Club and one of the founders of the Old Colonists’ Association. The death has occurred of Mr WilWednesday of Captain Douglas Hanning, at the age of 74 years states the “Otago Daily Times.” 'The deceased. who was well known from Wellingtofi to Bluff, was recognised as a capable master mariner. He came to New Zealand when a young man, and had command of tradin'schooners on tho coast at various per" iods. During the past two or three years Captain Hanning had spent most of his time about Otago Harbour. i Mr. David McKee Wright wellknown as a poet and journalist-, has just died says a Sydney cable. The late Mr. w right was 61 years of age and was for some time editor of tho Ne'son (N.Z ) ‘‘Times.” He came to Aew Zealand from Ireland in 1887. Mr George Walker, a well-known Auckland auctioneer and sportsman, was drowned while fishing at Rotorua on Thursday last. Mr. Walker was j ■ the Tongariro river clad in waders, when he was seen to sink. His son Justin went to his aid but also getting into difficulties his father ordered him to return. Help was obtained but it was then too late. The late Mr. Walker was for some years connected with the firms or Macky. Logan. Caldwell Ltd. and Arch Clark and Sons, Ltd. Visitors at the Masonic Hotel.
