THE TURF

HASTINGS TRACK NOTES AND GOSSIP. Mr A. D. Potter has made arrangements that after the Wellington Cup meeting his horses, Bulolo ana Monetize, be transferred to Ellerslie, where in future they will be trained. The lure of the game. Some little time back T. F. Quinlivan came out of retirement and decided to train one or two horses only, despite persuasions to increase his team, but now has decided to tram on an extensive scale and has accepted horses irom Mr. J. A. Taylor, of Wellington. This evening Tresham and the imported grey gelding Royal Picture arrive. ... Maunga bears a very big appearance after his spell. He immediately goes into work, and thus he will have plenty of time to be in the right condition when the jumping season commences. This gelding last season was one of the most promising ’chasers seen out for many years, and with a bit of luck would have won big races. His first start over country was the Wanganui Steeples, which he won in great style. This was followed by a good second to Beau Cavalier in the Great Northern. His next outing, it will be remembered, was in the Hornby Steeples at Riccarton (Hunt Club meeting) and he greatly pleased by the easy manner in which he beat the opposition of the two miles, which was considered too short for him. Then in the National, when with a round to go, he was pulling double and to many looked a certainty, he fell. After the National Sammy Henderson, rider of the winner, Beau Cavalier, said he was much relieved when he discovered that Maunga was out of it. • • • Owner-trainer Joe Griffiths has purchased an untried four-year-old by King Soult—Vaelgang. San Fran—• Ngaio, Torpedo—Honeysuckle, so in breeding wants for nothing.

Torquil, during the kland meeting, was purchased b) ..1 Australian buyer. The three-year-old son of Lord Quex and Queen Lizzie, on form, has but little to recommend him, but those who know him anticipate the chestnut upholding the reputation of N.Z. horses when raced across the Tasman. Butterscotch will do the Wairoa and Gisborne meetings. Owner Griffiths knows all about the flavour of small fish. Mountain Heath is taking time to recover from the ill effects of the Awapuni trip and unless from now he makes a remarkably quick recovery will hardly be ready until the early autumn. • • • Red Fuchsia, since the spring, has had a fairly heavy time of it and as he has won five races and minor places his present spell is well earned. • N |» Raasay, in carrying 9.9 and making all his own pace to win easing up by three lengths, indicates that lie can, without argument, be placed with the best or New Zealand two-year-olds. His next appearance against Staghunter and Co. will be eagerly awaited here. • • v The win of Star Stranger in the Racing Club Handicap at Ellerslie came as a slight surprise here, but when it was found he was the actual favourite greater was the surprise, the live-year-old sori of Martian and Star Lady is reputed to be an animal of moods. • • • In such town hall company Bennance did well to gain a third at Auckland, thus paying expenses. Out at Ngatarawa old itapine is dodging about doing pace work and gives every indication of standing up to another solid preparation. The Shrew and Raima earned a cheque for £B6O at the Auckland Trotting Meeting, Mr. J. H. Lloyd richly deserving tne many congratulations on his return here. • • • • At not one of the many trotting or race meetings during the holidays did a local representative tail to win. Shirley is making a recovery from her mishap which prevented the Manawatu trip. AU going well she win be a starter at Trentham. The first yearlings to put in an appearance at local stables are two bonnie Lord Quex fillies, the property of Mr. J. S. McLeod. Royal Damon, although failing to earn any money on the northern trip, ran very well. He is to be taken to the Wellington meeting. Mr. J. M. Cameron's old brood mare Salute has foaled a fine foal to Tribulation. She is to be rested this season. “Cam 1 ’ has not despaired of breeding a good one Irom tnis mare as he says Idalia was twenty-seven when she begat Sir Lancelot, one of the fastest horses ever bred at Karamu. • • • Essential has been turned out, while Queen’s Choice and Charmaline are spelling in the paddock. This leaves trainer Kemp with but High Society and the Solferino—Mazurka youngster in work. Dame Fortune has forsaken Megan Lodge altogether of late. • » • S. Waddell continues to have trouble with Beacon Light, and in alj probability it will be the autumn before he sports silk again. • * # Kahu Ariki has been afforded a i nomination at Wellington. The big track and long straight will suit the ■ Lord Quex filly. • • • Merle ' has developed into a fine mare and her running at Hastings was difficult to understand. AU going well the Elysian—Voca mare will compete in the Duro Cup. Calithe continues his scenic tour of the North Island and is en route to Wairoa. Grind National is booked for Wairoa. filr. C. F. Vallance, in his one and '.»My trip up the coast, won with Calluxt two years ago. Lant Mark (King Mark—Hoy), a two-) >ar-old relative to Anomaly, Shirley, and King’s Folly, has joined up with S. Waddell’s team. This youngster, who must be sixteen hands, is a fine cut of the thoroughbred and should make a name for himself on the turf.
