The Mayor of Timaru and representatives of the citizens’ unemployment committee waited on the Hon F. J. Rolleston, Attorney-General, and asked, on behalf of immigrants who are out of work and wish to return to England, whether they will be allowed to do so before the expiry of five years’ residence in the Dominion. It was represented that many immigrants were in a bad plight and considered they would have better prospects of obtaining work in England than in New Zealand. The Minister asked that the name of each immigrant who desires to return to England be forwarded to him, and he promised to see what could be done in the matter. In reply to a question as to whether the Government would assist these immigrants financially 1 to return tn England, the Minister said lie did not think the Government would assist auv immigrant who bus been monetarily assisted to come here t.i return home.
