FIJI ISLANDS
EVERYTHING LOOKING PROSPEROUS
FUTURE OF MEAT CANNING INDUSTRY.
MANUFACTURE OF BUTTER.
(Special to “Tribune.") Auckland, Sept. 6. A meat canning plant ii shortly to be operated in Fiji. Mr. William Sutherland, an ex-native commissioner at Suva, Fiji, returned to Auckland to-day after spending a holiday in the islands. He said that everything is looking prosperous in Fiji and the whole of the islands ho visited are vastly improved. He left there seven years ago. Proof of how Fiji is forging ahead is shown by the fact that butter io now manufactured there, said Mr. Sutherland, and it is just as good as that made in New Zealand. Cattle do very well and the meat canning industry started by Mr. Marks, one of the leading merchants, looks as though it will have a bright future. Ships are now supplied with butter and no doubt they will take some of the canned meat.
The pineapple industry has good prospects, said Mr Sutherland. The sugar cane plantations ar* looking well and the cocoanut belt speaks well for this season’s supply of copra.
