NEWS AND NOTES.

The Napier hockey team was entertained at a dance in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday evening by the local Ladies’ Hockey Club, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Music was supplied by Miss M. McLeod (piano), and a dainty supper was dispensed by the local ladies. A pleasant evening was spent at the local Fire Station on Friday evening last, when Sub-Superintendent Richards presented Firemen Bridgeman, Cassidy, and Watson with a seagrass chair each, as a memento from the Brigade in view of their recent marriages. The evening was spent in musical and vocal items, and a toast-list was honoured.
Dr. C. Raymond has sufficiently recovered from his recent illness, his many friends will be pleased to learn, to be able to resume the practice of his profession. Officials have been elected for the benefit gymkhana (in aid of injured Rugby players) as follow:—Director of Gymkhana: Mr P. R. Smyrk; starter, Mr I. Nutt; time,-keeper, Mr E. W. Caulton; judges, Messrs. W. E. Mitchell, A. C. Russell, and A. D. Gibson; tape steward, Mr M. Ryan; call stewards, Messrs. W. Adams and R. S. Ricketts; ground stewards, Messrs, H. M. Tansley, W. Booth, J. Butler, R. Glentworth, T. Portas, and J. Ireland; putting competition, Mr T. Given; dress steward for footballers’ race, Mr Nutt; place-kicking competition judge, Mr J. Russell; stewards, Messrs. R. Glentworth and A. Jj Gibson; ladies’ call stewards, Mesdames Cooper aad Bas. Nickalls; judicial committee—hockey: Mr W. Hall; other events, Messrs. A. C. Holms, W. Johnstone, and W. J. Wood. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce a well-attended meeting of business-men was held last night, Mr. J. E. Hall, president presiding. Addresses on community lighting were delivered by Messrs. E. A. Goodger (a member of the Central H.B. Power Board) and J. K. Lee (engineer), and Mr. A. McNeil (business agent for the N.Z. Railways) dealt with the proposals of the Department as to meeting local requirements as to a reduction in freight charges between Waipukurau and Napier, also Port Ahuriri. The brief discourses were both instructive and informative, being followed with close attention.
