The team will assemble at the Em pire Hotel at midday on Saturday. NORTH v. SOUTH ISLAND. A TRIAL OF RUGBY STRENGTH. Wellington, Aug. 30. That the annual North v. South Island match should, as in the past, be an annual trial match of strength between the two' islands, was the opinion held by the management committee of the Wellington RugbUnion to-night. The subject cropper up through a notification from th New Zealand Union that ewing to th early departure of the New Zealam team for South Africa next season » hnd been decided that only player s who could make the trip to South Africa should be included in this season’s North v. South match. The chairman (Mr. J. Prendeville) said he did not agree with the view The match between the two islands should be an actual trial of Rugby strength, irrespective of whether the players taking part could go to South Africa or not. Besides debarring many players who could not go to Africa, it would be unfair to debar the Maori players of both islands from taking part in the North v. South game. He moved, “That this committee considers that the North v. South match should be an actual trial strength between the two islands, and, if not, it should be played as a trial game,” Mr. G. F. Jackson seconded the motion.

Mr. J. King said he agreed with the New Zealand Union. The trials to select the team for South Africa had to be played this season, and under the circumstances it would be no use including player s who were not available for the South Africa tour.

Mr. Murphy held the same view. They wanted all the trials they could get. Mr. H. D. Morgan said there might be a young player who was good enough to get into one of the island teams this year and it would be unfair to deprive him of his chance just because he could not make the trip to South Africa, Mr. A. Neilson: That should not weigh against the success of the New Zealand team next year. Mr. A. J. Griffiths: The New Zealand Union are holding plenty of other trial matches. If only players eligible to go to South Africa are allowed to play this season, this year’s North v. South game cannot count in the records. Mr. Prendeville’s motion was carried, ALL BLACK TRIALS. CANTERBURY’S PROPOSAL. Christchurch, Aug. 31. The Canterburv Rugby Union decided last night to write' to the New Zealand Rugby Union pointing out the strenuous nature of the All Black trial programme and suggesting, if possible, that the final trial match. New Zealand Possibles v. Probables, be eliminated and that the North v. South match he substituted.
