(Dug by “The Delver.”) On Friday next acceptances will be taken both for the first day of the Manganui J.C.’s Meeting and for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s fixture. T. Green was not riding at New Plymouth on Saturday. His mounts at Marton next Frdiay wlil be Alloway. In the Shade. Grand National. Kalos, and Butterscotch Though still trained by J. T. Jamieson at Papakura, In the Shade will now run in the colours of Mr IV. S. Glenn. M.P.

K. £. Hutch. Green’s principal tutor in jockey ship is presenting to the public another budding champion in Ronald Stratton, a diminutive “knight of the pigskin.” who is the possessor of a very nice seat and pair of hands for such a miniature edition. Stratton will make his debut at Marton, when he will have the mount on Bov in the Spring Hack Handicap The association of the South Island jockey A. E. Ellis with G. New’s Awapuni stable has had a very auspicious opening. New took three horses to last Saturday’s Taranaki Hunt Meeting, Maidos, Wanderlus. and John Nod. The two first-named proved winners, and Ellis rode both of them.

The well-known Winton (Southland) sportsman, Mr A. Gerrard, has been the victim of an unfortunate mishap. Through the breaking of a shaft, Mr Gerrard and a friend were thrown from a gig and the 'ormer had one of his legs severely injured, with the result that the limb had to be amputated below the knee.

Grand Knight has been scratched for all engagements at the Marton Meetimr.

About 20 two-.vears-olds were schooled at the barrier at Ellerslie one morning last week. Fair Go is the name claimed for the two-year-old fillv by Arrowsmith from La Paloma. bv HallowmasHelen Portland.

A further attempt was made to school Passionate at Trentham last week, but he refused to jump.

Mr W. H. Gnisford. when in M'ellingfon last, week, stated that ho had had word from G. Jones that all was going well with Commendation. Mr (I. Gerard’s Lucinette, bv Martian from the Neu- Zealand Cup winner Lady Lucy, is duo to foal shortly to Limond. This will bo her first loal, and she will not be mated this see

Perle de Leon was among the passengers from Wellington bv last week’s Sydney steamer He went over with Mr W, G. Stead’s team of youngsters in charge of H. Neagle. and his mission will be in the hurdle races to be run at the spring meetings over there.

A par is going the rounds in which it is stated that the Auckland horseman A Driscoll is to ride Grandcourt among others, at the Marton Meeting. Has Ted Brandon been getting the Okawa sire ready, “under the rose,” for a coup on the sly?

Bisora, a three-year-old chestnut geldnig by Bisogne from Ora. so ■> brother to Benzora. says “Achilles.'’ looks like doing good service for 11 Doyle later on. He is a solidlv-built customer, who should develop into a good galloper. At present he is backward

Rafa, who has been off the scene since he ran uplaced in a hurdle race at the Taranaki Christmas Meeting of 1925. made his reappearance on Saturday at New Plymouth but without success. Wrtiing of him before the race, a New Plymouth exchange said: “This onece brilliant sprinter is gone in the wind, mid although he is now a good iumpfr. '.lie distance will probably find him out. ’

Though Aberfeldy mav be nominated for the hurdle races at Geraldine, says the Christchurch “Star.” it is probable that he will be a competitor in flat events at that meeting. He claims a New Zealand Cup engagement, and A. E. Wormaid is anxious to see how he will shape among the flat racers before definitely fixing his future programme.

The Merry Moment gelding Jovial, says the same writer, has been naid up for in the hurdle race at Marton, so a trip north for him would appear to be a possibility. Most likely the Hack Steeplechase on the second dav will suit him best, for he should have been a winner over the steeplechase country nt the Grand National Meeting.

The only Australian-bred horse engaged in the forthcoming New Zealand Cup is David Garrick, a four-year-old gelding by Comedy King, owned by Mr. C, Elgar. When a yearling David Garrick was bought by Mr. C. E. Elgar for llOOgns., but so far he has managed to win nothing better than a hack handicap.

Seven three-year-olds are included in the New Zealand Cup nominations, viz., Star God (by MartianStar Lady), Streamer (by Paper Money—Tortrix). Ark Royal (by Kilbroney—Lady Viclflt), Satrap (by Paladin—Persian Lilac), Stretton (by Leighton—Bayou), Amor (hy Archery Warlove), and Honey (by Kilbroney—Halina). None of them has been thought good enough to carry more than the minimum 7st. Some of them, however, are quite untried and may surprise the handicapper.

N. Cunningham has the Frenchbred Tidal working smoothly, and sends him along at Ellerslie when the opportunity occurs. This colt, who went amiss when taken to Australia recently, says “Early Bird,” is built on racy lines, but has several peculiarities which make him a hard horse to train. Bright Glow, a four-year-old mare by Day Comet—Lady Gwendoline, who won the Waihi Handicap at the Taranaki Hunt meeting on Saturday, did not race at two years. Last season she was saddled up on three occasions, in the Electric Hack Handicap at the Opunake meeting, and in the Telegraph Hack Handicap and the Ngamotu Hack Handicap, both at the Egmont R.C. winter meeting. She was unplaced in each race.

The first of the progeny of Royal Divorce, the King’s Proctor—Jessamine horse who did a term of stud duty at Awapuni last season, made its appearance a few days ago, the dam being Khassia (bv Hymettus— Sulva, by Acrostic—Grecian Maid), who is the property of Mr. C. HousePalmerston North . From an Auckland exchange it would appear that, prior to tne reported negotiations by Sir Anthony Hordern for the purchase of Beau Cavalier, his owner, Mr. A. G. Quartley, had been approached on behalf of an Australian syndicate However, figures were not quoted, and Mr. Quartley says that the only time, up to now, when he put the Chesterfield gelding under offer was for a couple of hours during the Grand National meeting at Riccarton.

F. Davis, at Woodville, is in the same predicament in regard to tracks as many other trainers, says an exchange.' He has Gascony, Doree, and Great Charter to get ready, as well as the Psychology—Desert Gold and Grandcourt—First Blow two-year-olds, both of whom are showing excellent form in their preliminary stages. The Woodville tracks are very soft and not at all suitable for young horses, so Davis has been to Wanganui to make arrangements to transfer his team there temporarily.

The Polymman, full brother to The Cypher, Acamar and Battlement, who lias been pottered about for some time, is still more or less unsound. says the Christchurch “Sun.” He has been entered for the New Zealand Cup, but it is unlikely that he will be a starter in that race. Though his trainer has persevered with him for some time, his trouble has not yet been located. After doing steady pace work, it is not unusual for him to pull up lame, yet with a little exercise -he appears quite sound again. Early in his career much was expected of The Polymnian, but he frequently displayed unsoundness and had to be given lengthy spells.

Though the running of the New Zealand Cup is a good deal more than two months away, turf writers, with the weights now before them, are already summing up prospects. Of the forecasts noted “Beragoon," in the Christchurch “Sun.” goes for Star Stranger, Piiithair, Front Bank, Rapier, To Monnnni, Royal Game, Beau Geste. “ICurly Bird,” in

the Auckland “Sun,” likes Rapier, Grand Knight, Beacon Light, Piuthair, Degage and Rapine. The Christchurch “Press” picker selects the two top weights, Rapine and Count Cavour, with Te Monanui, Piuthair, Footfall, Rapier, Set Sail and Assurance. The “Dominion” writer, “The Watcher” holds his hand and contents himself with concluding his review thus: “It cannot be denied, however, that the 7.0 minimum and the 9.6 maximum are greatly in favour of a top-weight of the calibre of Rapine.” • • • Acknowledgment has to be made of a review copy of “Gloaming, the Wonder Horse,” an eulogistic compilation made by Mrs. G. D. Greenwood. giving in detail an interesting biography of the life of her husband's great performer. Mrs. Greenwood is evidently a real hero-worshipper, and she has missed nothing that goes to make up the Welkin gelding marvellous record of success in both the Dominion and the Commonwealth. It is a record that affords many items not known to all that will interest admirers of a great horse. The works issues from the New Century Press, Ltd. 475-7 Kent street, Sydney.

Lady Fave, who won the Hunters' Flat Handicap at New Plymouth on Saturday, is a four-year-old by Day Comet—Lady Vere, trained at Ellerslie by A. Julian. Last season she had only two outings, both in maiden events at Te Kuiti. in neither of which did she get into a place. She also ran unplaced in the Ladies’ Bracelet at Ellerslie. It must thus have been on very recent track work that she was mat' favourite on Saturday, or else because of very weak opposition.

In view of his fine record—four wins and three seconds in ten starts —last season, one of the surprises of last Saturday’s racing at the Tara naki Hunt meeting was the good dividend, not very much under double figures, paid by the Bisogne—Kathleen Mavourneen gelding Monagtian Probably it is accounted for by the fact that he bad not been seen out since the New Year meeting at Stratford, so that the public would not be expecting him to be in his best shape That this was a mistake is shown by his heating the speedy Denier, another of Bisogne’s gets, by three lengths.

The five-year-old Nassau—Brayton gelding Affirm, previously known in the Dominion as Judge’s Box, who won the principal event at the Williamstown (Victoria) meeting on Saturday, is evidently in good form iust now. It was only two or three weeks earlier that he scored a success in the Malakoff Stakes at Caulfield. On that occasion, it will be remembered, he met with a very mixed reception on account of his having run badly a week earlier when made favourite. We have yet to hear how his latest win was taken oy :he public. Anan Louise, wffio ran third to him last Saturday is also a Maorilander, being by Nassau—Mountain Dream, and so a full sister to the well known steeplechase mare Erie.

HASTINGS TRAINING NOTES.

Saturday again saw a large contingent of horses out doing fast and interesting work. The Jarge majority of gallops were done on the new grass gallop laid down twelve months ago. This track will soon prove a boon to to local trainers.

As a guide on Saturday morning the “clock” was useless, as some gallops were done near the inside, others in the centre, while again not a few were well out. In England the timing of gallops is but seldom used by trainers, they relying solely on trial horses and weights, which fully analysed appears the better guide.

T. F. Quinlivan was out before breakfast with Minter and Dapper Boy, being the only trainer out so early. Both the Kilboy horsos are rapidly getting into shape and will be on hand early.

Epistle is right back to her 1925-1) form when she performed so well. With Royal Damon as a companion over five furlongs she showed the way home, finishing strong.

Othon, who is booked for Dannevirke, is well forward and worked impressively.

Since joining up with R. Goose man’s string Lipsol has improved out of all knowledge and easily accounted for Coot over seven furlongs. Nahi, over five, finished in front of Clavers and the way in which this colt finishes indicates he will run -jut a distance; strange, but he gallops better with a welter weight up. Clavers, the half sister to Zaza by Mountain Knight, should soon get out of the “maiden” class. In lh< above gallop she covered more ground than necessary.

The two-year-olds High Court and Black Girl (Absurd —Hinepango) went over three furlongs, the forrnei being the best. Black Girl, in Quinlivan's stable, is a rare cut of a filly, but being broken in late is not so forward as others of the same age.

Charmarline surprised by showing s clean pair of heels to Essential and King Quex over half a mile. The lat ter could have done a little belter. Charmarline is by Clarcuceux from the one-time speedy mare and Australasian six furlong record-holder, Char milla. She will race in the nomination of Mrs Haldane. This filly is small, but there is no mistake about her gal loping ability.

Kalos, who is a better horse than »t any previous time, was not extend ed to beat Sanburr.

Liason, as far as time was con cerned, did the best four furlongs ol the morning.

Over the saifle distance Toka held an adventage throughout on Avisogne. The former fs the makings of a use ful welter horse.

Watchman is another who is coming back to term, deconstrating same bj easily defeating Handy in a six-fur-long go. Watchmen will be restricted to hurdle racing in the spring and so qualify for jumpers ’ fiats.

Ganymede made no race of Keen over the same distance, finishing half a dozen lengths in front. Lombardo and Ballyfarnon did a useful working gallop. The latter Is a most promising hurdler. Eloquent, with the worse of the weights, proved too good for Hypno tic. Raasay, recovering from his cold, was cantered and trotted. « * * The three-year-old filly Clogne (Nassau —Culross) who has been earmarked by the track watcher as above the average, uIU pace work only. Bennanee pleased in a half mile sprint.

Hinehohoro and Torquie finished abreast in a'~useful working gallop over four furlongs.

Gold Box moved freely and has made a full recovery from his Gismorne accident.

Timipouri, alone, strode over five furlongs in a convincing manner.

Braeman was far too good for Mix ed Heather in their flutter.
