Many accidents occur because of failure to use the emergency brakes when the footbrakes are not sufficient to make an emergency stop.
In using your engine as a brake on hills, the resistance in high gear may b 0 sufficient for graded declines; on steeper grades use your intermediate gear, and on very steep mountain grades on which you should drive slowly, use low gear tor braking.
Should you lose a nut from your wheel on the average car, try one of the nuts which hold the hood in position as a substitute—they usually tit the wheel bolts. This also applies to some American cars. The hood can be easily kept in place by a piece of wire or string. No preventive of carbon monoxide poisoning is useful except open air. Motorists should never work in a closed garage with the engine running.
Brakes that are not adjusted and equalised rattle, chatter, and squeak. The tread of one or more of the tyres is soon worn down, the frame of the car is distorted with strain, and the wheels lose their alignment. Have your brakes adjusted every 1000 miles when necessary.
Oil the steering gear more frequently during rainy weather, because water and mud are splashed on the parts-
By using the proper size wrench on a nut the possibility of stripping the threads is lessened.
