DAVIS CUP PRELIMINARIES. JAPAN ELIMINATED. (Received 27, 9.40 a.m.) New York, Aug, 26. France eliminated Japan from the Davis Cup, Brugnon and Cochet defeating Harada and Toba, 9—7, 6—l, 6—2.—(A.P.A. and “Sun” cable.)
France now plays America in the final for the Davis Cup.
BETTY NUTHALL’S SUCCESS.
AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
(Received 27, 11.0 a.m.) (British Official 'Wireless.) Rugby, Aug. 26. Miss Betty Nuthall, who. though lhe youngest competitor distinguished herself at the Wimbledon lawn tennis tournament this season, has reached the fourth round of the American women’s singles championship. When play opened yesterday, all the British players were still in the championship. which has never yet been won by an Englishwoman, but after Miss Nuthall had won the opening match of the day against Miss Penelope Anderson, of Virginia, all her countrywomen were beaten. Miss Nuthall's victory takes the girl champion of England into the last eight.
