HASTINGS TRACK NOTES.

Due to the approaching spring meetings local trainers are busy now preparing their respective teams to compete thereat. Of late years Hawke’s Bay horses have not been up to past standards, but this season, on present indications, the quality of our horses is on the improve, while with so many most promising English sires doing stud duty in the district the future is assured. The twoyear olds are well grown and the big majority show plenty ofc speed, while their barrier practice shows forwardness.

Yesterday morning horses engaged at Marton, Wanganui and Dannevirke were sent along against the watch.

Minter, the unraced half-brother bv Kilhoy to Comical, was out. and galloped away before any other horse had put in an appearance. Breaking 51secs. for the half-mile demonstrates his ability to gallop. Hinehoro and High Court (Grand Court—Taleteller) moved well in a half-mile working gaifop.

Over three-quarters of a mile Eloquent was going better than Hypnotic in 1.21}. rhe former was mailing a row due to getting her tongue over the bit, and not to respiratory trouble.

Nahi just touched Coot off at the end of four furlongs in 52jsecs. Lady Carrol’s three-year-old son of Cynic and Tatau Tatau is a most promising sort.

Royal Damon was going but slightly better than Lipsol at the end of six furlongs in 1.02}.

Epistle carried too many guns over the latter part of six furlongs for Ganymede in 1.21.}. The Ing hailbrother to Runnymede shows pace over a short distance but soon tires. A big colt, no doubt he will require time before passing judgment.

Bennanee, looking a picture oi health and condition, was restricted to a working gallop. Mr. Macfarlane’s Catmint should pick up a rich handicap this season.

Ridden out. Grand National failed to head off Kalos lor half a mile in olsecs.—a good gallop/

Peneus, in a working gallop of once round with a couple of companions, showed that he is in great fettle. By the way, this gelding's correct weight at Marion is 11.10, and not 10.10 as telegraphed to the local press.

Liaison (Lord Quex —Lovematch) engaged in the Malden at Wanganui, put plenty of dash into her work. This filly is good.

Butter Scotch, who in her last start dead-heated at Hastings, is in rare fettle for Marton. She got to the end of six furlongs in 1.20 2-5, a length in front of Othon.

Handy was sent twice over the country alone, but fell at the sod wall. On being remounted he gave a good display of lepping.

Raasay. our best two year-old, unfortunately is,suffering from a slight cold aud was restricted to trotting. At present colds are prevalent among the juveniles but not of a serious order.

Royal Court (Grand Court—Lady Nolan), in T. F. Quinlivan's stable, goes well and although he might not come up to classic form this season will win handicaps.

Old Patuki, with Queen's Choice, went remarkably well in a working gallop of once round.

After lunch hour Torquil was the only horse to gallop and by going three furlongs on the plough in 37 secs, gave a taste of his galloping ability. Mr. J. S. McLeod's halfbrother, by Lord Quex, to Tiega, will make his first public appearance in the Maiden at Dannevirke. Local track watchers are awaiting the event.
