CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES
AGREEMENT WITH GERMANY
London, Aug. 23. It i 8 stated that Sir Alfred Mond is at present visiting Germany in connection with negotiations between the Imperial chemical industries and German Farben industries, or the Dye Trust, whose capital is over 1000 million marks. It is believed a draft agreement drawn up only awaits final revision. The German combination since the war has given attention to the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen, liquifaction of coal, manufacture and cheap hydrogen and artificial silk, and the woolanisation of cotton, and is now contemplating the formation of a European chemical trust.
The “Morning Post’’ editorially expresses anxiety. “It has been said the agreement may tend to give Germany preference, which might conceivably leave Britain in a position of inferiority in war time. No doubt due thought has been given to this aspect by the British combine, but it seems to be a matter of public policy. The terms should be submitted for responsible scrutiny to the country before a final agreement is reached.’’— (A. and N.Z.)
