FINANCE FOR SETTLERS
PETITION TO THE HOUSE. LAND COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS. (Special to Tribune.”) Wellington, Aug. 25. The Lands Committee to-day reported on the petition of Mr. 6. A. Macdonald and 14 others, of Napier, praying that provision be made whereby the petitioners’ underleases and subleases be classed as securities upon which loans may be granted by any State loan department.
The committee recommended that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration and further recommended that the Government push on as expeditiously as possible with the acquiring of the freehold of the land in question and so give the petitioners good and sufficient security for loans from G o vernine n t depart men ts. Mr. John Mason (Napier) said he was very pleased to hear the recommendation of the committee. The policy of the Government has already been decided and if this were put into effect settlers who were in a very difficult position would receive welcome financial relief.
Mr. H. M. Campbell (Hawke’s Bay) said it was an absolute necessity that settlers should be helped financially. Most of the men were returned soldiers and the only thing wanted to put them on their feet was extra finance.
