SIGNAL SUCCESS
BALDWIN’S CANADIAN TOUR MISCONCEPTIONS REMOVED. THE TEMPER OF GREAT BRITAIN, (British Official Wireless). (Received 25, 12.30 p.m.) Rugby, Aug. 24. Commenting on the Canadian tour of Mr. Stanley Baldwin, who will reach London this evening, “The Times” says the visit has, by general consent, been a signal success. It regarded as particularly welcome the reasoned optimism which marked Mr. Baldwin’s account of the Old Country, and continues: ‘‘Many things in Canada conspire to paint a pessimistic picture of life in Great Britain.” Mr. Baldwin took particular pains to remove the misconceptions, which he is better placed than any other man to remove, about unemployment in Great Britain, in the tribute ho paid to the patience and fortitude which has generally characterised unemployment. He has been doing a real service, of which Englishmen going to Canada in humblest positions are likely to reap the benefit. “He has illustrated repeatedly the temper of Great Briain, and while he has not minimized troubles due to the new state of the world, he has made it very plain that eomniisseration from across the water on the plight of Great Britain is a habit which can be carried to excess.”
