ANNUAL POLICE REPORT
CRIMINAL STATISTICS. INCREASE RECORDED. (Special to “Tribune.”) The annual report of the Commissioner of Police reveals a net increase in the criminal statistics of 1145 on the figures for 1925. The proportion of offences to the population was 2.19 per cent., as against 2.16 per cent, in the previous year. A decrease of 423 is recorded in the number of prosecutions for drunkenness, the decline being from 8277 to 7854. 33.26 per cent, of males and 48-76 per cent, of females having been previously convicted.
There were 511 prosecutions against hotel keepers during the year, resulting in 285 convictions for sly grog selling. Sixty-two convictions were entered and 21 convictions were recorded for other offences under the Licensing Act in no license districts. Fines imposed on sly £>rog sellers amounted to £llOl. There were 420 prosecutions and 373 convictions uniter the Gaming Act. and 115 convictions were entered for offences in connection with bookmaking, the fines totalling £3lOO.
