BREACHES OF AWARD
ENGAGEMENT OF A NONUNIONIST CHARGES AGAINST FIRMS. At the Hastings Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr A M. Moivlem. S.M.. P. H. Kinsman. Inspector of Award- Napier, claimed LID against T. Ritchie and Co., plumbers, Hastings, for a breach of the Wellington Industrial District Electrical Workers’ Award, bv engaging a non-unionist and failiftz :o give notice to the secretary of t-lie unnn within three days of the engagement. The inspector said that he had warned the firm before. Thoms Ritchie pleaded guilty but desired to explain. His Worship said he would hear what the defendant had to sav to “this tremendous charge.” The defendant explained that the man was non-unionist, and he askea the man if he would join the union, but he did not seem disposed to do so, and the defendant, in order io comply with the law. pai the union lees for the man out of his own Docket, and he thiught it would be nJ] right The inspector nointed out that there was no reason for the defendant to pay the man’s fees. All the defendant was required to do was to notify the secretary of the engagement within the specified time. The defendant was fined 10s. Loach and’ Price, plumbers, similarly charged, were fined in a similar sum.
