FIRE ENGINES
THE RIGHT-OF-ROAD. SHOULD THEY HAVE IT? Whether fire engines when on the way to a fire should nave the right of the road was discussed by the Fire Boards’ Conference in Wellington. It was staled that in many cities and borougns by-laws gave the right-of-road to fire engines, and a remit came before the conference suggesting that provision should be made in the Fire Boards Act for a uniform by-law, so that in the event of any accident such local by-law could not be set aside as unreasonable. Several delegates expressed the view that it would be too dangerous to give fire engines unlimited right to the road, and the remit was nega tived. Another remit suggesting that all traffic should bo compelled to slop during the passing of a fire brigade, a uniform by-law to be drawn up by the Local Bodies Association dealing with the brigades’ rights to the road, was also lost.
