NILE IRRIGATION
FURTHER CONTRACT LET. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby August 21 Following a recent announcement that John Jackson. Limited, had received the contract for the new Nile barrage at Nagh Hamadi, Messrs Ransomes and Rapier Limited, have now obta ued an order for the necessary sluice-gates and operating machines. The scheme forms the next step in the Nile irrigation which began in 1899 with the construction of the famous Assouan dam. followed bv the Esna barrage, built in 1908. and the Sennar dam. opened last year. The site for the new barrage which will be over half a mile in length, is 500 miles up river, between the existing barrages of Assiut and Esna. It will affect the irrigatiorf of 500,000 acres at all seasons of the year, formerly only possible at a time of high flood This will enable two crops per annum to be grown, instead of one. and also will avoid risk of incomplete irrigation due to low levels and the consequent failure of crops.
