Inspector D. J. Cummings, of the Napier Police Station, is at present on furlough in the Waikato district.
Mr C. S Plank, deputy-chief electrical engineer, of Wellington, has been in Napier the past few days.
Sir Joseph Cook sailed from London for Australia on Saturday after nearly six years in Kag/and as High Commissioner for the Commonwealth.
The engagement is announced of Miss Annie M. Dann, daughter of Mrs and the late Mr. C. M- Dann, of y Thistle street, Napier, to Air. Arthur H. Burns, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Burns, of Richmond road, Hastings.
Advice has been received in Gisborne of the death at Dundee of Mr. Donald Clements, a Gisborne hotelkeeper, who, with his wife, was making a tour of the Old Country. The deceased was prominently associated with sport.
The death has occurred at the Waikato Hospital, after a short illness, of Mr Vivian Henry Sanson, Deputy-Official Assignee at Hamilton. The late Mr. Sanson, who was 40 years of age, was born at Sandon, near Feilding, and is the only son of Air. H. Sanson, who for some time latterly has been living in Hamilton.
Mr. F. Ross, who has been acting as secretary of the Wellington Em ployers’ Association for the past twelve months, has been permanently appointed to that position. Mr. B. L. Hammond, for several years past assistant secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, has been appointed assistant secretarv and industrial adviser to the Wellington Employers’ Association. Mr. C. R. Searle has been appointed second as sistant secretary.
Mr. M. A. G. Jenkins, the m«n who fired the first British shot in the Great War. is in Wellington. Mr. Jenkin s came to New Zealand at the beginning of this year, and is now farming at Te Kauwhata, 54 miles south of Auckland. Not many of the immigrant farmers in this country have had their portraits printed in the great English dailies to do them personal honour, hut Mr. Jenkins has been a national figure on account ol his unassailable distinction.
