At the Fire Board’s conference in Wellington, a remit was carried urging an amendment to the Act nermitting fire boards to collect from owners expenses and charges incurred in attending a fire where the house or building is uninsured, or where the personal propertv therein is uninsured. The Victorian Act. it was stated, contained such a nrovision. It was considered that the Act should also be amended in the direction of compelling hotels, board-ing-houses. convents, orphanages, hospitals, homes for aged people, and houses of more than one storev in heigh’t to be fitted with fire escapes. It was also decided to urge the Government to instal automatic fire aln-ns in all Government buildings. “There’s a live wire down Can you send a man. please.” was the purport of a message received bv the electrical department from Hamilton East on Thursday. A linesman went out at 10 p.m. nnd spent some time in the rain, without result. When his investigations were reported to the lady who had niven the message, she remarked: “Oh I’m sorry: it must have been a shadow.”
