BOXING.
MADDOX LOSES HIS TITLE FAILED TO MAKE THE WEIGHT. Auckland, Aug. 22. A professional contest for the New Zealand championsnip featherweight title took place to-night. Duke Maddox (Hastings) holder, failed to make the weight by two pounds, the title automatically going to Johnnie Leckie (Dunedin), challenger. The fight lasted only a round and a half. Maddox was knocked down three times in the second round, his seconds then intervening. A preliminary ten round professional featherweight bout between Matt Hatton (Auckland) and I’. Black (Wellington) was won bv Hatton in the fifth round. Black 2 ’ seconds throwing in the towel. Private advice received in Hastings shows that Maddox was suffering from a sprained ankle, which accounts fo r his very unexpected defeat. Maddox arrives home to-morrow night, when further details will doubtless be available.
