ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

(Per Press Association.) Mr and Mrs T. F. Landels, of Graham Lodge. Mataura, met with t nasty motor accident on Saturday night. The car swerved in loose gravel near Gore and was tipped into . Charlton creek upside down. A following motorist rescued the occupants who were unconscious and pinned beneath the car. Both were taken to hospital, Mrs Landels suffering from shock and facial .bruises and Mr. Landels from severe bruises to the back. John Holmes Hartley, of Rangiora. a carpenter, received a serious injury last night through his head striking an electric light pole while he wqs travelling in a motor. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition Through being thrown out of a gig on Saturday, James Gerrard, aged 60 years, residing near Winton, Invercargill, sustained a severe fracture of the left leg. E. Hall, of Leamington, sustained a broken leg at football in Hamilton on Saturday. Monica Claire Oldfield, aged five years and seven months, was playing in the bedroom of her father's house at Broadfields, near Christchurch, on Saturday morning, before an open fire, when her nightdress caught alight. Her brother and sister tried to pull off the blazing garment, and her brother, aged 11, threw a blanket round the girl, but the child was severely burnt and died in the Christchurch Hospital on Saturday afternoon. At an inquest the coroner commended the brother and sister on their prompt action, and returned a verdict that the child died from burns and shock accidentally received. The police received a message from Cheviot that Alfred George Kemble, of Spottiswood, had been found dead with a gunshot wound in the head. Kenible was 39 years old. His mother lives at Spring Creek, Marlborough.
