OBITUARY.

MR. JAMES BARRY.

An old and highly esteemed citizen of Hastings passed away yesterday at his residence, Norton road, in the person of Mr. James Barry. The deceased, who was 67 years of age, and who had been in failing health for some time, was a native of Ireland. He arrived in Napier from his native country 40 years ago, settling on the Hastings Hats as a dairy farmer and residing her© ever since. He was deeply interested in dairying and he was chairman of the Heretaunga Dairy Company for some years, whilst he was well-known in the show ring as a successful breeder, who carried off many prizes with his milking stock exhibited in Hastings and elsewhere. He leaves a widow to mourn him and with her general and sincere sympathy is expressed in her sorrow. The funeral will leave the residence at 2.15 p.m. to-morrow for the Catholic Church, and thence for the Hastings Cemetery. The deceased was a past-president of the Hastings Hibernian Society and the members of that bodv are requested to attend the funeral. PROFESSOR J. SMYTH. Mrs G. Graham, of Havelock North, has received a cable announcing the sudden death of Professor J Smyth, of Melbourne University. at Tokio, Japan on August 19. where he was travelling with his wife for health reasons. Mrs Graham is a sister of the professor, who was very well known throughout the North and South Islands, having been the Chief Inspector of Schools for Wanganui and district for some time. .He was also known and respected bv many people in Napier and Hastings. He lost his son. a young medical student, less than a year ago.

Mrs Graham has also had word of the serious illness of Mr Strack, a retired schoolmaster, of Hawera and a brother of Mrs Smyth’s. He had charge 'of the Education Court at the Dunedin Exhibition, where many thousands of children will remember him.
