EXCITING EPISODE
ATTACK WITH A KNIFE. Hamilton. August 20. The taking of the life of W. Dilli- ’ car is alleged to have been attempted, and that of a female companion threatened, in an exciting episode which occurred at Hamilton last night Dillicar called in a car for a young lady nurse to take her to a medical case, and when putting an umbrella in the back of the car after entering it accidentally struck a man who was crouching on the floor. On being discovered, the man leaut up and struck Dillicar a heavy blow on the back of the neck, and a severe struggle ensued, the driver finallv ejecting the man from the car and starting off. On arrival at their destination they had scarcely pulls- 1 un when a man, who evidently had raced • ast on a motor-cycle, snrang out from a hedge, threw open the door and fiercely lunged at the driver with n knife. Fortunately he missed and was unable to get a blow home. A desperate struggle took place. Dillicar finally fighting off his assailant and. stepping on the accelerator, sped awav after the man had made repeated lunges with the knife It is understood the man previously threatened the life of the young lady concerned. who broke off an engagement with him when she found that he was married, and 'ince had been the object of his unwelcome attentions. FARM LABOURER ARRESTED. Hamilton, Aug. 20. The arrest has been effected of Nathaniel Clark, a farm labourer of Eureka, in connection with the assault with a knife on Dillicar and a lady companion two night ago. The accused, on private information, this morning was asked to enteinto sureties to keep the peace as complainant was afraid he intended to do him and the lady bodilv harm. Un an assurance being given to the contrary no objection was raised to the release of the accused and the case was adjourned until Wednesday.
