YPRES
AN OFFICIAL BRITISH FILM. AT HAVELOCK NORTH ON TUESDAY. Posterity’s eye-witness, the film camera, has achieved its most enduring triumph in “Ypres.” This film is the screen’s greatest vindication. The imperishable story is revealed for the first time to the generation that lived throgh it. It is an epic picture, and one which ought to be shown all over the country at least once a year, for te story would thrill the younger generation with Its deeds of valour and endurance, and would keep in the minds of the older people what our-gallant men did in the salient of Ypres to save this country from the heel of the Hun. It would be difficult to adequately describe the course of this story, but it enables one with a little imagination to appreciate what war is, and the heroicendurance and stubborn resistance offered, first by the “‘Old Contemptibles” and later by the younger army, to the all but overwhelming hordes of the enemy. The manner in which several V.C.’s were won is pictured, and throughout the whole film the producers have shown a restraint and absence of exaggeration the presence of which would have ruined the story. In view of the well-known characteristics of ‘Tommy,” there are several humorous incidents—as at the front—thus adding to the verisimilitude of the representation, which is bound to touch the deeper feelings of the onlooker, and, if possible, increase his admiration of those who fought for him. This picture will be screened next Tuesday at the Havelock North pictures.
