BUTTER PRICES.
WEDDEL’S REVIEW FOR PAST YEAR. A BIG DROP. (Received 19, 10.15 a.m,) London, Aug. 18. Weddel’s review for the year ended June 30 states that the top prices for salted butter during the year were as follows:—Danish 178/3 a cwt., New Zealand 163/6, Australian 160/9, Argentine unsalted 157/6, Siberian 144/11. These figures represent a drop ranging from 12/- to 24/- compared with the previous year, New Zealand being 24/- lower. The outlook does not promise any very material recovery, the supplies of most producing countries tending to increase, and the general trade of Britain being still in an unsatisfactory state, it is unlikely that retail prices can be raised without affecting the consumption. Producers must face the position if they hope to get the industry on profitable lines again. The solution is to be found not in the direction of higher selling costs but lower production costs.— (A. and N.Z.)
