THE LIBERAL FLAG
UNFURLED AT AUCKLAND. NO LEADER YET APPOINTED. Auckland, Aug. 19. Dr. W. H. Horton presided at a meeting of about 60 persons last night officially to unfurl the flag of Liberalism. He said that the decent people of New Zealand, who were becoming more and more dissatisfied with, the policy and methods of the party in power, were combining to secure a government expressing their aspirations. It was stated that no choice of a leader had yet been made, Mr. W. A. Veitch having contended to act temporarily, and Mr. G. W. Forbes having declined for the present to drop the National Party’s title. It was resolved that it be a recommendation from this meeting to the democratic representatives in Parliament to use every endeavour to bring about union of the democratic forces of this country on a common policy.
