HAWKE’S BAY SCHOOLS

TERM DATES AND VACATIONS. FEBRUARY 6th ADHERED TO. The question of the dates of terms and vacations for next year was raised at the monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board this morning, when the Department again wrote pointing out that the opening date fixed by the Board, viz., February 6th, 1928, did not fit in with the suggested scheme of dates issued by the Department with the authority of the Council of Education. The date fixed by the Department for the opening of primary schools was Wednesday, February Ist. COUNCIL’S RECOMMENDATIONS. The Department further wrote that it was anxious that as far as possible arrangements should be made for synchronous holidays, and Council of Education had recommended adoption of scheme of holidays for 1928 as follows:— Primary Schools: First term, from Wednesday, Ist February, to Friday, 4th May; second term, from Monday, 21st May, to Friday, 17th August; third term, from Tuesday, 4th September, to Wednesday, 19th December. Commencing date, 1929, Monday, 4th February, 1929. The Board was accordingly asked to fix its terms and holidays for next year in accordance with this scheme, and the Department desired to know by September 15th whether the Board would adopt this scheme, and if not, the Department desired to know what dates the Board wished to adopt, pointing out that it was necessary to fit in with the arrangements made by the Railway Department for the supply of free school season tickets. If these dates were not followed, pupils must themselves pay the extra cost to the Railway Department for the extension of their school tickets.

Mr. J. S. Wauchop contended that the Board knew more about local conditions, and was of the opinion that the Board should be allowed to decide on the dates. He accordingly moved that the previous decision of the Board be adhered to.

The chairman explained that the matter had been fully discussed on previous occasions, and the decision had been arrived at after all the various circumstances prevailing locally had been fully and carefully considered.

It was decided to reply to the Department that the Board had decided to adhere to its previous decision.
