“PUTTING US OFF”

COMPLAINTS BY EDUCATION BOARD, THE DEPARTMENT CRITICISED. That the Department had declined to make a grant towards the painting of the roof at Dannevirke North School was the advice received at the monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board this morning and it was a signal for protests from several members.

Mr. W. Cuthbertson pointed out that this matter was near the bottom of the list of things the Board wanted investigated, but the Department apparently was ignoring the suggestions of the Board. “We are only being slighted and put off and I move that we write to the Department asking it to carry out the works in the order recommended by the Board.’’ he said, adding that he knew some of the works could or would not be done, but they should be taken in order. “We are better off than we were a while ago, thanks to judicial pressure,” remarked the chairman.

“Month by month we are being told by the Department of some work that it cannot see its way to do.” declared Mr. J. S. Wauchope. “By the end of the year there will be twelve things they can’t do. It seems to me it would he better if the Department told us what it could do. and not what it can’t do.” The resolution was carried.

The Hastings Ladies’ Croquet Club has purchased a fine block of land containing over one acre. It is very conveniently situated, facing Ridge road (Stortford Lodge), and among the contemplated improvements to the croquet ground will be the erection of a six foot iron fence, which will afford ample protection to three sides, the back portion bein" sheltered by a high live fence. When the laying-out is completed the ground will be one of the best in the district.
