James Gordon Bennett, a young seaman, was charged in the Supreme Court at Christchurch yesterday, that on July 6, on the steamer Maori, he robbed John Robert Scollay of £lO with personal violence. Accused pleaded not guilty. The jury foumi the prisoner guilty of assault only, and not guilty of robbery. The prisoner was remanded for sentence. The British Labour Ministry announces that the number of unemployed last week in Britain was 1,021.000. This is 95.000 less than the previous week when the number out of work was increased by a public holiday.
