SENSATIONAL TRIAL
TOWN CLERK SENTENCED TO DEATH, MURDER OF COUNCILLORS. SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIR. (Received 18. 11.30 a.m.) Capetown, August 17. ,one of the most sensational trials in the history of South Africa concluded when de Leeuw town clerk of a small Orange Free State town, was sentenced to death for the murder of three members of the Town Council The Crown case was that de Leeuw had prepared an infernal machine, by which he blew up the Town Hall and three councillors in order to destroy all evidence of his defalcations of municipal moneys. The evidence showed that _if the books were not in order within a week he would bo arrested. He then made inquiries regarding the nower of dynamite and petrol if used together.—(A. and N.Z.)
