ANOTHER MAD RUSH
DIAMONDS |N THE TRANSVAAL. 10,.000 RUNNERS. Cape Town. August 17. Ten thousand diggers and runners made a mad race for wealth at a farm at Welverdiend, Transvaal, when it was proclaimed as alluvial diamond diggings. This was nrobably ths last of South Africa’s diamond rushes, as new legislation provides for a ballot for claims. Five hundred police were present in view of rumoured threats of a deliberately planned false start, but the only trouble was a fight over pegs before the rush started. The scene, as thousands of motorcars and lorries departed from the tin town over the dusty veldt to the diggings, beggars description. A motley crowd of citv clerks, veteran diggers and professional runners ran in multi-coloured costumes, from bathing costumes to pyjamas. The race was over three miles.
