WAIPUKURAU.

HEWB AND NOTES. (Own Correspondent). In connection with the destruction by fire of an outbuilding at the homestead of Mr. Harry Hobson, Hatufiia, on Tuesday night, a number ot saddles were saved, in addition to the motor car already mentioned. During the day two tons of chaff had been placed in the stable loft. Tile building was insured for £250 in the State Office, and the contents for £6O. The loss is estimated at approximately £5OO. The ladies’ committee of the Girl Guides held a successful produce stall on Tuesday and raised a good sum towards the payment of their uniforms. The Waipukurau patrols are very strong numerically and deserving of public support. Miss H. E. Bowen, of Levin, is at present a patient in' Lister Hospital, Wellington- After undergoing an operation on Friday last, she is now making satisfactory progress. Her many local friends will hope to hear of her complete convalescence at an early date. Miss Bowen is a sister of Mr. L. A. Bowen, of Waipukurau. The death occurred at Paliiatua on Monday of Mr. Janies Bissett, formerly of Waipukurau and Porangahau. A meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Salvation Army Hall on Tuesday, Mrs T. H. Groome (president) presiding over an attendance of fifteen members. Three new members were elected. Mrs. Groome gave a brief resume of the remits and work of the annual conference held at Wellington which was listened to with great interest. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr J- Winlove for the gift of a case, and the cartage of books to the Railway Station free of charge. A further donation of 23 books has been received by the secretary, and snyone desirous of adding to the collection may do so by forwarding their gifts to the secretary, or to Mr. J. E. Hall.
