PUKETITIRI BUSH.
RESERVE AT TANGO’.O LETTERS BEFORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The Napier Chamber of Commerce has forwarded to the Hastings Chamber replies from the Prime Minister and the Minister in Charge of Scenery Preservation (Hon. A. D. McLeod) regretting that, for the present at any rate, the Government was unable to regal’d the proposal that the Puketitiri Bush be preserved as a scenic reserve. Mr. McLeod pointed out that the area, provide ! with valuable milling timber, was not on a public road and cost the Government £4O an acre, and he asked if there was any disposition on the part of those interested to contribute towards the cost <6f its acquirement.
Mr. W C Whitlock said that no good could come of the chambers discussing the matter, as the Napier Chamber had it in hand, in conjunction with delegates rrom the County Council, the Farmers’ Union, the Thirty Thousand Club and other organisations, and it remained for them to move further in the matter now. The letter was received.
Mr. F. E. Smith submitted a sketch plan of a beautiful bush area at Tangoio. consisting of 44 acres, situated about two miles above the falls, and about 33 miles from Hastings and about 20 miles from Napier Mr. Thompson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, in conversation with Mr Smith, thought there would be no objection to handing this bush over to the control of a board as a scenic reserve. A good track Tonin be made giving admission to the bush which, being within easy distance, would make an attractive week-end resort for pleasure parties, and a narking area for cars could easily be made. It was decided that Mr. Smith he asked to confer wZh Mr. Harvey, if Napier, on the subject and report to the next meeting.
