OBITUARY.
MR. ELBERT H. GARY. FARM LABOURER, TO FINANCIER. Neu York, Aug. 15. Mr. Elbert 11. Gary's death removed one Of the most picturesque figures from the American world of finance. He had bee nil! a long time but details oi his condition were kept from the public owing to anxiety as to the effect of the news on the market. The announcement of his death caused . little disturbance, however, and ah upward trend followed the hews Which close observers declare is a healthy indication regarding the condition of the present financial structure. There were also many indications that plans were laid by financial interests to support the market systematically, thus preventing a break. Mr. Gary started life as a farm labourer in Illinois, afterwards becoming a lawyer and a judge, and then a financier—(A. and N.Z.)
