In spite of the adverse weather conditions, there was a good number of ladies present at an “at home” arranged by the Y.M.C.A. ladies’ auxiliary fn the Y.M.C.A. lounge on Friday afternoon. An excellent pio gramme had been arranged, and all the items were admirably rendered and greatly appreciated by all. The following progamme was submitted: Pianoforte solo, Mrs. Budd; songs Mrs. Christie, Miss Pratt, Miss Symonds, Miss Baker; recitation, “Lasia,” Miss Pratt. Competitions were indulged in, and the winners were Mrs. Clarence Bisson (president Napier Ladies’ Auxiliary), Miss Symonds (Hastings). Mrs. W. B. Nicoll (president of the Hastings Ladies’ Auxiliary), thanked those who had so kindly assisted in the afternoon’s entertainment. Accounts have been published from time to time regarding dumb people recovering the power of speech in some mysterious manner (states the “Dominion’s Wanganui correspond ent). The latest instance occurred during the Maori football match here on Wednesday afternoon. A Maori from up the river, aged about 21 who had been dumb all his life, became so enthusiastic in the game that he suddenly gave vent to a loud yell. His re latives and friends were so astonish ed that, for a time, they were inclined to side track hini. no doubt thinking that he had been possessed of the taipo. No one was more delighted than the yoUng Maori, who at the icr mination of the match adjourned te a neighbouring hotel and shouted wai piro for all his friends.
