BEAM WIRELESS.

IRREGULAR FADING OUT. London, Aug. 13. The vagaries of the Australian beam wireless continue to exercise the minds of those engaged in research work, who express the opinion that irregular and unexpected fading out is due to present year’s maximum incidence of sun spots. Beyond that they admit that the thing is in its infancy and that it is unwise to prophesy what the next two years wil] bring forth. It is understood South Africa is getting a seven hours’ daily service as a result of alternative wave lengths. There are similar expectations regarding India, but 'the Australian beam is not yet fulfilling the British stipulation for seven hours duty nt 100 words a minute, though it is getting more than the stipulation at a lower speed. It is at present hopeless to expect that an alternative wave length will be applied remedially to Australia, chiefly on account of the heavy cost attendant upon the alteration of the intricate tractors at present are not prepared aerials and reflectors, which the conto entertain. There is hope that the Indian experiments will be sufficiently successful to impel Australian alterations. There is already encouraging proof that the two minor outside variants of the main carrier wave never fade simultaneously. Meanwhile there is not the slightest hope of wireless telephony to Australia for at least twelve months. The plant is not yet prepared and nothing has been achieved as regards Canada to Australia. This will be last attempted because, owing to the disparity in time, telephony will have less commeri. I appeal than elsewhere. It will „e the end of the year before the British Broadcasting Corporation experiments with the short wave for Empire broadcasting, and there is yet much to bo done to improve overseas experi-ments.—-(A. and N.Z.)
