NORTHERNERS CLAIM SUCCESS.
Shanghai, Aug. 14. Sweeping successes by the Northerners on all fronts are reported. The Nationalist casualties in the recent fighting is estimated at 30,000 and the Northerners 6000.
Chang Chung-chang, the Shantung war lord, is assisting Suu Chuan-fang, erstwhile overlord of the five southeastern provinces, in his drive towards Pukow, the fall of which is expected momentarily.
Panic has seized Nanking, and the natives are fleeing to Shanghai by railway and in all classes of river craft. They declare that the recapture of Nanking by the Northerners is certain, and expect the city to be looted by the retreating Southerners. Chiaug Kai-shek arrived and conferred with the Nationalist Minister of Finance regarding the situation.— (A. and N.Z.)
