NEW ZEALANDERS AT SYDNEY. AN EXCITING GAME WON. Sydney, Aug. 13. The New Zealand hockey team played the first match in Sydney in fine, bright weather. Three thousand people were present, displaying great enthusiasm. New Zealand won the toss and played against a slight breeze, with the sun at their backs. The players took little time to settle down, hut the New Zealanders’ hitting was on the -rratic side. New South Wales, combining well, kept the New Zealanders on the defensive, Nettleton and Abel gave an excellent exxhibition Nettleton drew first blood, net. ting cleverly. Watts scored twice in quick succession, and the end of the spell saw the board reading 2—l in favour of New Zealand. In the second spell play on both sides improved considerably. Nettleton at an early stage secured a goal for New South Wales. Then FBison and Seacombe scored, putting New Zealand two goals ahead. In the last ten minutes plav was very exciting. New South Wales launching attack after attack, only to find the New Zealand defence unbreakable, and the game ended: New Zealand 4, New South Wales 2. THE NORDON CUP. t Masterton, Aug. 14. Wairarapa successfully defended the Nordon Cup against a Taranaki challenge on Saturday, the scores being four all GAMES IN NAPIER. Despite unfavourable weather some good matches were seen in Napier on Saturday. In the senior grade, Napier and Technical Old Girls drew, with the score 3 all. and Te Awa beat Matnriki by 3 to nil. The only junior game was between Technical Old Girls and Te Awa B, the latter being beaten by 3 to nil. NAPIER v. WAIPUKURAU. Napier and Waipukurau junior teams played a match on Saturday which ended in a win for Napier by 4 to nil. Most of the attacking was done by the winners and had it not been for the good work of Waipuk’s goalkeeper the score would have been much larger.
