A WORLD CONFERENCE. ITS NATURE AND SCOPE. Every question bearing on the population of the world will be discussed at an unofficial but important conference to be held in Geneva, beginning on 31st August. ’’The World Population Conference, 1927,” is the first of its kind to be held, but it will not be the last. Sir Bernard Mallet, who is to preside, has the nature and scope of the subjects to be discussed. “ The question of population.” he said to the London ” Morning Post” representative, “is one which loom* largely in the public mind at the present moment. To-day a great volume of scientific work is devoted to study of fertility of some stocks and classes, the slow reproduction of others, the inheritance of medical and physical defects, and the quality of national stock. The Advisory Council has arranged for scientific authorities on biology, sociology, and statistics to read papers on the subjects which they have made their own. ” The conference will open by con sidering the general biology of population growth. This will be dealt with by the well-known American biologist, Professor Raymond Pearl. The next session will deal with the optimum density of population and the relation between population and food supply. " Other sessions will bring up for consideration the differential birthrate of various classes and strains within different nations, and heredity in relation to social stratification. Migration, emigration, immigration will all be discussed, as will also the problems involved in the existence of great areas which are unoccupied or occupied by backward races." Among the nations to be represented the conference will be Great Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Australia. Finland, Norway, Italy, Belgium, and Sweden. The English delegates, in addition to Sir Bernard Mallet, include Professor A. M. Carr-Saunders, Dr. F. A. E. Crew, Professor J. S. Huxley, Mr. J. M. Keynes, Sir Humphrey Rolleston, Lord Buckmaster, Sir Charles Close, Lord Dawson of Penn. Mr. C. V. Drysdale, Mr. Havelock Ellis, Mr. J. B. S. Haldane, Sir Thomas Horder, Dean Inge, and Dr. Marshall.
