SAVING EXCHANGE.

ON POWER BOARD ACCOUNTS AGENT APPOINTED IN HASTINGS The question of collecting cash at Hastings due for the consumption of electricity is a problem that has been causing the members of the Hawke's Bay Electric Power Board no little trouble and at yesterday’s meeting a solution to the problem was decided upon,

The secretary H. H. Wylie) reported that when in Wellington recently attending the Power Board*’ Conference, he discussed with several secretaries the best means of collecting the cash, both from the viewpoint of the board and the consumers. Lt appeared inequitable that consumers around Hastings should have to pay exchange on cheques and after going carefully into the matter he had come to the conclusion that the best method to adopt would be that in vogue in Southland/

“I recommend that the Bank ni New Zealand be approached to act as receiving agent for the board at Hastings, with authority to give a receipt on behalf of the board.” lie said. “The meter reading accounts would be printed with a receipt form at the foot of the account to be used by the bank, and receipts for these amounts would not U* issued by the boa ill. The bank would be required to furnish a weekly return of ah amounts received and would be required .to transfer the cash received to the .board’s credit at the Bank of New Zealand at Napier. For this work the bank to be paid a small commission on the cash received, the exchange on the weekly remittances, and a bank fee of 10/- per annum. 1 understand the commission paid by the Southland board is one-eighth per cent.”

It was pointed out that there hiul been numerous enquiries made by the consumers adjacent to Hastings and it was estimated that it would benefit some 600 consumers and the amount involved was estimated to be something in the vicinitv of £3500 -er annum.

The board decided to adopt this course, the chairman remarking, “We can at least give it a. trial.”
