Unemployed Insurance
Proposed Scheme. GOVERNMENT ADOPTION 't URGED. DETAILS PLACED BEFORE " MINISTER (Per Press Association). Wellington, August 12. Details of the unemployment insurance scheme, which it was asked that the Government should adopt, were placed before the Minister of Labour by a deputation representing the Labour movement. Mr Anderson promised to lay it before the Cabinet. The deputation consisted of Messrs P. Fraser. H. G. R. Mason and F N. Bartram. M.P ’g. and Mr Cornwell, president of the District Council Alliance of Labour, and Mr Whoppv. member of the Council of the Alliance. The proposed scheme is a contributory one. Mr Fraser said that the workers were prepared to contribute one-third, and it was suggested that the employers should pay a third and the State a third. Another proposal was that there should be some organisation to co-ordinate matters in connection with finding employment. This unemployment council or board would be representative of the Government. Government departments, employees, local bodies, and workers. Mr Cornwell said the conference referred to by Mr Fraser represented 85,000 workers. It was something new to get the New Zealand workers to agree to a contributory scheme, and it was felt that the Government should take the matter up.
