CLAIM FOR £2000.
WAIPUKURAU WIDOW SUES GUM MERCHANTS. LOSS OF HUSBAND. Auckland, Aug. 11. In the Supreme Court, the Public Trustee, on behalf of Ellen Jane Littleton, of Waipukurau, Hawke’s Bay, claimed £2OOO damages from Sweetwater, Ltd., gum merchants, for the death of her husband, Jonathan Littleton, who, when stirring a cauldron of gum solution in tho company’s works at North Auckland on January 13th, fell from a plank into the boiling liquid, and was badly scalded, and died a few days later. It is alleged that the firm had not provided reasonable safeguards. The company deny negligence, but state that they had never repudiated their liability to pay compensation to the full legal extent. Counsel for plaintiff said it was necessary to stir the mixture, and to do so, the deceased was required to cross the cauldron on a bar plank nine inches wide. There was no hand-rail or safety device.
