COMPENSATION CLAIMED.

ALLEGED INJURY TO LAND. CASE AGAINST RIVER BOARD. Blenheim, Aug. 9. A special sitting ot the Compensation Court was held in Blenheim to hears claims tor compensation against the Wairau River Board. The first case is one in which Noel Patton, of “Hazelmere,” Springlands, is claiming compensation for lands alleged to have been injuriously affected as the result of the board raising the height of an existing stop bank on a certain part of the property and erecting a new bank on another part of the property. In all, the claimant asks for £570 15/- damages under the following headings £B2 10/- for alleged deprivation of the use of lands on which the banks are constructed (2 roods, 30 perches, at £l2O per acre); £197 10/- for severance of the main part of the land from the portion left between the stop banks and the stream (2 acres, 1 rood, 30 perches, at £BO per acre); £45 15/- tor soil scooped out of claimant’s land to form banks; £5O for alleged deprivation of access to water and water rights; £BO, for the alleged injurious effect of the stop banks on a portion of the lands ; £l6 for alleged damage to fences and gates; and £lOO compensation for alleged loss, through the board’s work, of the prospective sale of half an acre of the land at £l6O-

The defence was that the board's works had not injuriously affected the claimant, and that eren if they had. the claimant had received much betterment as the result of the work as more than to compensate him for any damage done.

After hearing a good deal of the evidence Mr. .Justice Ostler reserved judgment until the morning.
