The following accounts of the principal events decided at Riccarton yesterday are clipped from the “Dominion”;— All 22. acceptors went to the post for the Winter Cup, Magna Charta being installed a very hot favourite. Practically all the favoured ones were drawn well out, Indian Sage going to 21, Kaiti 16, and Chickwheat 15. Magna Charta drew 11, and being in the middle of the field, caused considerable trouble when he began o play up. being eventually sent right outside. Joy Bird was also troublesome, and stood behind the field, and when let go he was last away, Black Mint, Chickwheat, and Soltoe keeping her company. An-owmir slut away immediately, closely followed by Kaiti, Royal -Mint, and Whenuanui, with Solferite, Nincompoop, and Magna Charta lying well up. When settled down Magna Charta went to the front, and led from Arrowmir, Kaiti, Nincompoop, Solferite and Huikai, Ueyal Mint getting knocked back. Indian Sage was in the middle of the field, a good way from the leaders. Arrowmir dropped out on the turn and -Magna Charta led Kaiti into the straight from Nincompoop, Huikai and Solferite, with Assurance coming up fast and Indian Sage also coming forward. Kaiti tackled Magna Charta at the false rail and immediately had his beaten. Kaiti was still in front just outside the last furlong post, but Solferite then put in ills claim and, going on, won full of running by three lengths. Nincompoop and Assurance graduallv closed on Kaiti and the latter weakened, Nincompoop gaining second money by a head from Assurance, with Kaiti another head away. There was two lengths then to a big bunch headed by Taboo, Jov Bird, Indian Sage, Chickwheat. Black Mint, Tresham and Royal Mint.

GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE.

San Forte was the only late withdrawal from the big jumping event. Beau Cavalier was always most in demand and he finished up £7OO ahead of Kawini, whom many good judges predicted would win. Maunga was about £l7O below Kawini, with Peter Maxwell and Charlatan the best backed of the others. The race was a fine spectacle until the last five or six furlongs, as the field raced in close order. Little description is needed, for Beau Cavalier went to the front from the start and was never headed. For the first round ,us neprest attendants were Charlatan, Zircon, and Peter Maxwell, but they were all sell bunched coming into the straight again. Mauflga, who had been allowed to get well on his feet, ran up to second place, and followed Beau Cavalier over the stand double, only to hit hard with his knees at the second obstacle and to throw his rider on landing. The rest were all well bunched close up except Vice Grand, who had tailed off, those of the bunch closest to Beau Cavalier still being Charlatan, Zircon and Peter Maxwell. Charlatan ioined Beau Cavalier at the Kennels double, and was still with him at the next (the sod wall), but he hit hard here and it took all the steam out of him. Beau Cavalier then went right away and led for the last fence from Peter Maxwell. Charlatan. Zircon, and Kawini. Once over, Henderson kicked him up, and he came home full of running ten lengths ahead of Peter Maxwell. The latter eased ip over the last hit in his hopeless chase, and finished only hafl a length ahead of Charlatan. Some six lengths further back came Kawini, and then Zircon and Tuki. Kipling fell and Vice Grand did not complete the course. METROPOLITAN TROTS. Christchurch, Aug. 10. The Metropolitan trots are being continued in beautiful weather before a large attendance.
