“It is very difficult to deal with this type of offence, otherwi.se ihan by inflicting a term of imprisonment.

It show a bad state of the minds of the young men or to-day when they take a car belonging to other people, and drive from one end of the island to another. There are any amount of young fellows who have not the faintest regard for the. rights of the other man, and by stealing his car, getting drunk and killing people they are a menace to humanity. A man cannot leave his car for a few minutes to do some business, without some such man as you comes along and steals it; but you do not mini so long as you satisfy your wishes without regard to the property, which in this case, is worth £3OO. You will be convicted and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment’’ These remarks were made by His Worship to Colvin Harris who pleaded guilty to a charge of having, at Wellington on April 2, converted to his own use, without colour of right, a motor-car valued at £3OO, the property of L.
