WAIPAWA COUNTY.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. (Own Correspondent). The Waipawa County Council met yesterday. Present: Ci's. A. RoBottom (chairman), J. Butler, N. Paulsen, L. Glenny, J. A. Kerr and C. Thomsen. A letter was received from Martin and Dyett, Wellington, regarding land taken for widening road near Knight’s.—The chaiman to see Mr. Ford. A. Knight wrote in reference to fencing a portion of the land now on the county road.—The council agreed to the fence remaining as it is, provided that when it is being rebuilt it be put back to the proper line. The council will find the material for easing the corner on Argyll-Otane road, Mr. Knight to assist in keeping the fence in repair at Cracknell's Gully. The Auckland branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union asked support of a proposal to reduce protective customs taxation upon British goods—Received. . The N.Z. Counties’ Association wrote asking that regulations be put into force to have all growth obscuring corners removed.—Engineer to go into matter.

The Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board wrote regretting inability to reduce the charge for street lighting, unless the number of lights in Takapau, Onga Onga aud likokino are increased to 15 lights each.—Received.

The Department of Lands and Survey wrote in reference to access to Marakeke railway station—To be informed that the estimate for the work is between £3OOO and £4OOO and that as an application for a grant has heen declined the council was unable to proceed further. The Waipukurau Borough Council asked for a grant for the dental clinic Received.

The Manawatu Gorge Board of Control forwarded the estimates for the year.—Council’s share is £36. The Waimea County Council, Nelson, asked support for a proposal to get an increased subsidy on the road board rates.—Received.

G. W. May asked for permission to instal another petrol pump.—Granted The pay-sheet amounting to £52.52 11/4 was passed for payment. The engineer reported that a bank had been erected by the settlers at Ruataniwha, where the river threatened to come over. He thought wirenetting was needed to strengthen the work done and some willows planted. —lt was decided to help in the work by providing willows for the planting.

Mr. Buchanan asked that fencing he is wililng to do be delayed on Jensens’ road. Work on the road is to be put in hand at once, the fencing to be allowed to stand; the Onga riding to pay over to Clinton 50 per eent of the .rates from the property for the upkeep of the road. ENGINEERS '’wr'OMMENDATTONS. The engineer’s recommendations were agreed to as follow:— Takapau: Two culverts between

Thompson and Davidson to be put in ; general temorary filling to be done at Onga Onga bridge; water-tables at Takapau to be attended to at once; Mr. Thompson to be asked to put in a culvert at his residence; the school committee also to be required to put in a culvert at the horse paddock. Clinton: Council to require culvert at Gower’s property to be enlarged or removed; matter of W. E. Thomsen’s fencing to be held over pending .a search for information.

Onga Onga riding; Chairman’s action endorsed in authorising filling at the Onga bridge; culverts on road between Onga and Gleeman’s to be enlarged ; tenders to be called for additional concrete channelling in Onga Onga township.

Ruataniwha: Road Fairfield near Carter’s: larger culvert to be put in on the Fairfield road near Carter’s; embankment to be built instead of proposed stone groyne at Fairfield, Messrs. Rathbone and Lewis to be asked to assist.

Hampden: A new 12in. culvert to be put in on Cross Hill road; a twin 18-inch culvert to be put in at Knapp's; small stream to be opened up to prevent flooding of O’Rourke’s road betyond the slab ; acquisition of an acre of land on a corner to be gone into with the owner and also acquisition of a piece of land from Mr A. S. G- Carlyon; scrub on Mathieson's road to be cut back ten feet; tenders to be called for metalling on Holden's road.
