Meetings of Protest
American Justice Denounced. SACCO-VANZETTI DEMONSTRATIONS. PLANS FOR GENERAL STRIKE. [By Cable —Press Assn. — Copyright.) (Received 9, 10.5 a.m.) Monte Video, Aug. 8. Fearing disturbances may result from the 24-hours’ strike called by the Labourites for to-morrow as a Sacco-Vanzetti demonstration, the troops are being kept at the armouries in readiness for any emergency. While the strike is.announced as of a “voluntary character,” the leaders have declared their intention of attacking any who do not participate. Shouts of “Down with the Yankee Imperialists” were heard at yesterday’s meeting of protest, when American justice was denounced.— (A. and N.Z,) WRIT FOR STAY OF EXECUTION refused: (Received 9, 10.5 a.m.) New York, Aug. 8. Petitions for a writ of habeas corpus and stay of execution of execution of Sacco and Vanzetti were refused to-day by the State Supreme Court of Boston, and the execution takes place on Wednesday.—(A. and N.Z.) TENSION STEADILY INCREASING LETTERS THREATEN WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION. (Received 9, 9.25 a.m.) New York, Aug. 8. Tension over the activities attributed to sympathisers of Sacco and Vanzetti is steadily increasing, though it is believed the proportion of alarmist acts originated in the minds of crazed persons. Fifteen letters were received in this city threatening wholesale destruction, two being addressed to newspaper offices and the remainder to the largest buildings in New York. The letters said: “We have enough explosives to destroy all New York.”
The letters are signed “Anarchists of the World for the freedom of Sacco and Vanzetti.” Tile police, are dubious regarding their authenticity but a bomb squad of detectives has been sent to guard the Woolworth, Equitable Trust and other skyscraper buildings. Meanwhile the local Sacco-Vanzetti committee is claiming that the letters have been forged for the purpose of discrediting the movement and the committee continues its plans for a general strike. GUARD FOR PRESIDENT. President Coolidge is still elaborately guarded. Secret Service men searched the church on Sunday before the President attended service. Police vacations continue to be cancelled in many parts of the United States and many public buildings, as well as the residences of prominent officials, everywhere are guarded. A series of minor strikes has already begun but in widely scattered regions, which are expected to increase as the time for the executiqh draws near. These extend as far west as California and south io the Argentine, Thousands of letters and telegrams are being sent to the officials connected with the case and to manynot connected with it, either severelycriticising or commending the action in condemning the men. Numerous appeals have alsm been addressed to President Coolidge to which he is not expected to reply.—(A. and N.Z.)
