Fergusson. High School B, a bye. HICH SCHOOL GAMES. TIMARuT WAITAKL Timaru, Aug. 8. The annual matches between Timaru and Waitaki High Schools were played here to-day. Both senior teams were in great form and gave a magnificent exhibition of Rugby as it should be played. The games were watched by 30G0 spectators, and the fast, clever, spectacular play never lacked interest. Victory in the senior game went to Timaru by 11 to 8, largely owing to the superiority ot the local forwards. In the junior game Timaru overwhelmed their opponents and won by 30 to three.

TE AUTE DEFEATED.

WIN FOR WANGANUI. Wanganui. August 8 Wanganui Technical College defeated Te Aute College bv 27 to d, after a most strenuous game. About 1800 spectators were present In the first snell ’Wanganui dominated the play and put on' 20 points to nil the visitors being slow in attack. The second spell opened fast, and Te Auto repeatedly attacked. Kingi, who was injured, was replaced bv Prebble. who nlaved n. great game. This half was full of thrills and ended with the score— Wanganui 27. Te Ante . 6 ROSS SHIELD TRIAL GAME. A practice match between Probables and Possibles for the Ross Shield semi-finals with Napier will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 3.30 p.m at Nelson Park. The names are aS follow:—

Lonergan presided over the weekly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugbv Union las night when the usual lecture was given, the subject being “The Duties of a Referee.” bv Al Straftord. Next week Mr L. Henry will speak on on “Points in General Play.” Discifssion having arisen over the last try in the M. 8.0 B. v. Technical 0.8. match plaved on Saturday last, it was decided to draw attention to the rules governing the occurrence, viz.:—

Playing the ball on the ground.— (1) A player who is lying on the ground with the ball in his possession must be penalised unless he gets up at once or rolls away from the ball. Otherwise he may, while lying on the ground pass or kick the ball. (21 A player who has been tackled and is lyinq on the ground may plav ’he ball with his foot. (3) A player who is lying on the ground reaches out and gets possession of the hall must be penalised for playing the ball on the ground. (4) A piaver on both knees who is in possession of the ball can go forward whilst in that position with the ball still in his possession.
