SHOP ASSISTANTS’ AWARD.
CONCILIATION COUNCIL I DISCUSSION. CLAUSES REFERRED TO COURT. Wellington, Aug. 9. The Conciliation Council to-day discussed two point* not included in the agreement reached last Alay between the New Zealand Federated Shop Assistants and th employers. One of the caluses omitted from the agreement provided for the extention of the hour of ceasing work from 9 o’clock to 10 o’clock on Xmas, and New Y'ear's Eves without the payment at overtime rates. The employers also proposed to put into operation Section 5 of the Shops and Offices Act which enables an assistant to be required to remain up to 15 minutes after the ordinary hour for ceasing work for the purpose of completing work commenced prior to the hour for ceasing.
It was agreed to let the present agreement stand, but the employees' assessors stated that they could not agree to the two additional clauses nor to the proposal that' the following clause be deleted: Seniors shall not be required to commence work before 8.30 a m., and where the present practice is for seniors to commence at a late houi such practice shall be continued. These three clauses were referred to the Court.
